Fort William Historical Park
Discover Fort William – the magnificent inland fur trade headquarters of the North West Company from 1803 to 1821. Our costumed characters will involve you in our exciting daily events and demonstrations which allow you to meet the Scottish fur traders, French voyageurs, artisans, farmers, Ojibwa and Métis aboriginals who inhabit the Fort.
You can also become part of the action with our many hands-on opportunities. Go paddling in a voyageur canoeon the Kaministiquia River, make a historic craft,
and mingle with members of our nineteenth-century fur trade society.
Fort William Historical Park is open year round and provides spring, fall, and winter season activities including artisan workshops, festivals & events, and private walking tours as well as conferences, meetings, and weddings. We also offer unique education programs for children and adults.
Your journey begins at the Fort’s impressive Visitor Centre. This picturesque facility overlooks the Kaministiquia River and contains the Admissions area, Café Kam, visitor seating and McGillivray’s Landing banquet area, Trading Post gift shop, and restroom facilities.
Watch the Visitor Centre’s video exhibit “The Hinge of an Empire“. The story of Fort William comes alive in this series of vignettes dramatizing the aspects of the fur trade story. Emerge from these thematic presentations and travel down to the fur trading post which features 42 reconstructed buildings including an artisan area, a working farm, and Native encampment.
Fully handicapped accessible shuttle buses and transports depart regularly from the Visitor Centre to the historic site during the summer season. Visitors can also choose to stroll along our picturesque Nature Trail to reach the fur trading post. Wheelchairs and strollers are also available at no charge for our visitors.
